Suspended ceilings in office spaces. Advantages and disadvantages of the solution
The structure, which is a suspended ceiling, is used not only in homes but also in office spaces. This architectural design element influences the aesthetics of the interior and has many practical functions. Suspended ceilings for the office are an excellent patent for covering electric wires or lowering a room. Although it may seem that this is an ideal solution, it is worth familiarizing yourself with both the advantages and disadvantages of suspended ceilings before deciding to install them.
Suspended ceilings – advantages
Improving the interior’s acoustic properties, reducing heating costs, or the possibility of hiding unsightly cables are just a few advantages of suspended ceilings, which are some of the most common solutions used in office spaces.
Noise reduction
Noise in the office caused by conversations, movement, equipment, or sounds from the outside makes it difficult to concentrate and thus reduces employees’ efficiency. Suspended ceilings are an effective way to provide acoustic comfort to all people working in the office. Because the suspended ceiling absorbs sound instead of reflecting it, we avoid reverberation and make the interior quieter. The thicker and heavier the ceiling, the better its acoustic properties.
Installation of unusual lighting
Due to the fact that some modern luminaires cannot be installed in a traditional ceiling, many people choose suspended ceilings. With this choice, we do not have to limit ourselves only to ceiling luminaires. Still, we can use designer luminaires and lighting effects, such as halogen eyelets or fashionable downlight luminaires.
Hiding imperfections and wires
A suspended ceiling is one of the most effective ways to mask cracks, bumps, and curves. Unless you decide on an industrial arrangement, you can also use a suspended ceiling to cover ventilation ducts, electric cables, pipes, and other elements that have not been forged into the ceiling.
Changing the proportions of the room
Using a suspended ceiling, we can both lower and raise the room. Interiors that are too high generate significant heat losses, have poor acoustic properties and are not very cozy; therefore, a suspended plasterboard ceiling will solve several problems at once. On the other hand, in rooms that are too low, it is enough to install mirror plates that optically increase the interior.
Energy-saving
Heat escapes upwards; therefore, the higher the room, the greater the heat loss and energy bills. Office suspended ceilings are an economical solution that will reduce heating costs. To provide even better thermal insulation, you can fill the resulting space with mineral wool.
Modern design
A suspended ceiling is not only functional but also a designer. Thanks to many arrangement options, the ceiling can be fully adapted to your preferences, adding effective lighting or forming any shape. The ceiling can also be used to divide the interior into zones, e.g., open space offices.
Office suspended ceilings – disadvantages
Although this solution has many more advantages, unfortunately, it is not without its disadvantages. Installing a suspended ceiling is particularly risky in old buildings that are not adapted to the additional load. What should you remember when choosing fashionable suspended ceilings for your office?
Risk of structural damage
Before deciding to install a dropped ceiling, check the strength of the ceiling. This control activity is particularly important in old buildings, where the structure is subject to many years of use. Installing a heavy ceiling with additional lighting equipment can add weight to a poor structure, so check that the ceiling can withstand the additional load.
Not for all rooms
In most office spaces, we can confidently install a suspended ceiling. However, it should be remembered that in interiors such as bathrooms or kitchens, we install a ceiling made of boards resistant to moisture – in this case, wooden or plasterboard panels will not work.
Watch out for leaks!
The development of gas installations is associated with obtaining appropriate permits. If a leak occurs, its detection may be difficult, and removing the failure may involve the plates’ disassembly. This solution also does not work if flooding the room, resulting in replacing the structure.
Despite several disadvantages, office suspended ceilings are among the most popular architectural elements, which remains popular over the years.
